Tough weekend for us in Buffalo, Sunday morning @ 01:00 3 kids 3, 6, & 8 died in a fire on Ontario St.  Kids were in the house and were rescued by brothers of the BFD but sadly 3 died. Sunday afternoon one of the brothers who fought the fire FF Dan Tourji of Truck 13 died while off duty. Dan was relaxing with his family on his boat on the river, he and his son went for a swim in the river and a swift current took them. Dan was able to get his son back to the boat before going under. Dan was 31 years old. As of 08:00 hours Engine 16 & engine 18 of the BFD were permanently closed. Engine 18 went out doing what they always did, a 2 1/2 frame fully involved came in at 2 minutes to 8 there last run. God bless Dan and remember all of our lost brothers & sisters.

Well Brothers. it's official - As of 1200 hrs on Oct 3, 2002, Ocean City was adopted into the Maryland Council of Academies. Finally, we have our own recognized training academy, so heres where we put our money where our mouths have been. Lets set the mark for training now that we no longer have to struggle to get it done. By the way - the Career Firefighter Paramedics Association (CFPA) of OC would like to team up with FOOLS and discuss putting together a training symposium/conference sometime in the future. More than 50,000 firefighters from around the world are expected to cram Times Square next week to rally for higher pay for their New York brethren, the Daily News has learned.The Uniformed Firefighters Association is organizing the demonstration for Friday - the day before a massive memorial service for the 343 FDNY members lost on Sept. 11, 2001, is held at Madison Square Garden. Union President Steve Cassidy said his members want to call attention to the fact they have been working without a contract for 28 months.The UFA wants a "substantial raise, similar to what the teachers received," Cassidy said. City teachers won increases of 16% to 22%."We want to let the politicians know it is time for them to do the right thing," Cassidy told The News. "Firefighters are sick and tired of being told how special they are - and being paid a salary that does not allow them to feed their families."Probationary firefighters earn $31,000. Top pay for a firefighter with five years' experience is $49,000.UFA officials took part in a similar rally in August, when the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association was in contract arbitration. The PBA's pact was later settled with an 11.5% raise spread out over two years."The eyes of the world will be on New York City this weekend with so many firefighters here to pay respect to the FDNY. We also want the world to know we've been working without a contract or a raise," said Firefighter Brian Harvey of Engine 236 in East New York, Brooklyn."The city is notorious for dragging its feet when it comes to contract negotiations, and we're frustrated that the city never settles a contract within a reasonable amount of time."

Well gang, hope everyone got a chance to see Brother Trimper's spot on the learning channel. It was hysterical to say the least. Nice to know someone taught him how to ride a firetruck like a Ricaroni trolley rider. It might have been the most Mary Poppins-like manuever I've seen yet.

He does, however, recover many of his points with the fact that he didn't embarrass the entire company by having T-5 on the show... His and Brother Donovan's heroic attack of the HQ dumpster was also quite inspiring.

All joking aside, it was a good plug for the OCVFC. Unlike many of our Brothers, he managed to get through an entire date without the girl storming away or slapping him. Way to go, T-Pot!

Brothers. A situation is beginning to un-fold in Oakland, California. The city, facing an unprecedented budget shortfall reaching in the 35 million dollar range, is contemplating cutting our forces dramatically. The plans range from shutting 3 stations and our fireboat down, to rolling blackouts of 2 stations, 3 weeks at a time. A little background on our city and department: 420,000 people in 55 square miles, the highest per capita structure fire rate in California (approx. 1000+ working structure fires a year), 25 Engines, 7 Trucks, 1 Fireboat, staffing is 1+3 on Engines, 1+4 on 3 trucks and 1+3 on 4 trucks. Our forces are already stretched thin as it is, with waits as long as 10 minutes or more for a truck at a working fire in some districts. The city is owed millions of dollars from the port (2nd busiest on the west coast, 4th in the US) but is unable to re-coup the costs due to NEVER SUBMITTING THE BILL!!!!!! This is just one example of the mutts in our administration. We need support from our brothers around the country. Please let our officials know that we are not alone in our fight!! Just wanted to let everyone know that Timmy a.k.a. bighead has been named the head of the month club, member of the year. In refernce to coming out the other night my short, bald, and blind hero. Some of us had duty crew Friday night and unlike when you are at work were not getting paid to sleep. Then some of us had to go to "terrorist drill" and I "" that sarcasticly. I was absolutely stunned and caught completely off guard. * How did I complete 50-years? It was easy. I started early; lived long enough; and loved every minute of it in between. The Fools International Executive Board is preparing for the 2004 Fools Annual Convention in San Francisco in October. As was voted on and approved at the 2003 Fools Convention in Charlotte, there will be a $5 donation asked from each Fools member that will go towards the funding of this years as well as future conventions. We ask that each chapter start collecting the $5 from each member, and send it into the International so we can support our chapters towards these conventions. The Chapters (and individual members with no chapter affiliation) can mail their checks to: FOOLS International P.O. Box 23-7743 Cocoa, Florida 32923-7743 Please make sure to note on the check that it is for "Member Assessment" Another order of business that needs to be completed prior to the convention is the nomination for the three awards that will be given this year. They are as follows: DANA HANNON AWARD- This award was given last year for the first time. Dana Hannon was a Fools member that made training part of his life. He was an FDIC/FDIC West HOT instructor, as well as a member of the Wyckoff, NJ Fire Department. Dana was a member of the FDNY and was killed on Sept. 11, 2001. This award will be given to the Fools Member who shows a true passion for training his Brother and Sister firefighters. Through training, we can ensure that our Brothers and Sisters will have the knowledge and skills that will protect them on the job. (Last year's winner was Bruce Clark from the Palm Beach County Fools) FOOL OF THE YEAR- This Fools member is an all around ambassador to the mission statement of our organization. A member that has spread the message of the Fools not only through his or her own chapter, but outside of the Fools, bringing in new members, and starting new chapters. By setting a good example to other firefighters, a positive image of our organization is spread to all who come in contact with him/her.(Last year's recipient was Scott Hardin from Charlotte-Metro Fools) CHRIS BLACKWELL AWARD-This will be the first year of this award, given to the most active Fools Chapter. Chris was a Firefighter for the FDNY assigned to Rescue 3. Chris was also a Fools member, receiving his card only 3 months before being killed in the attacks on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. Chris was also into training, teaching collapse training at FDIC and FDIC West as a HOT instructor. Chris was also awarded numerous times with medals of bravery from the FDNY. This will be the first year of this award, given to the most active Fools Chapter. A chapter that has been active in their own community, and fire service community by fund raising events, training opportunities and the like. A Fools Chapter that has shown not only their fellow firefighters, but the general public the true brotherhood of our profession through purpose, kindness and dedication.
